The state on Thursday ordered a two-week delay in Florida property tax payments that were due March 31.

The due date is now April 15, said state Rep. Chip LaMarca, R-Lighthouse Point, who had urged Gov. Ron DeSantis to grant an extension.

Under Florida law, property taxes that aren’t paid by March 31 are considered delinquent on April 1.

The extension was issued by the Department of Revenue to assist people affected by coronavirus, LaMarca said. The order was signed by the agency’s executive director, Jim Zingale.

The order applies to all counties and provides that payments remitted by April 15 are considered timely.

“It provides relief to some of our households” who are suddenly in a financial squeeze, LaMarca said.
